Prior to founding Velasco & Associates in 1995, Kathy held executive marketing and editorial positions at the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association, International (FMA) in Rockford, IL – a nonprofit association serving the metal forming and fabricating industry. Her 17-year career at FMA began as associate editor of three trade magazines and culminated as executive editor and association vice president.

She graduated magna cum laude from Western Illinois University, where she earned a bachelor of science degree in English and broadcasting. She is a member of the Association For Women in Communications and the American Society of Association Executives, and serves on the boards of directors for the Discovery Center, Family Counseling Services and the Rockford Network businesswomen's organization, as well as the advisory board for the Ethnic Heritage Museum.
